A sauna thermometer shaped like a fish — kala, in Finnish — cut from solid heat-treated Finnish birch and marked in Fahrenheit from 60 to 260 degrees. The dial sits behind a copper-toned bezel where the gill would be, with fins and scale lines engraved into the wood around it, and at eight inches long it stays legible from the far end of the bench. Heat treatment drives the moisture out of the birch before it's cut, which is what keeps a wooden thermometer steady in the wet heat it hangs in. Built by Veico in Keuruu, central Finland, for a home sauna or a lake cabin.
